Where to Stay in Cusco: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels by Travel Style

Cusco Main square

For most first-time visitors, the best place to stay in Cusco is the flat area around the Plaza de Armas. It is walkable, close to restaurants and tour pick-ups, and involves the least climbing at altitude. San Blas suits couples who want character and can handle hills. San Cristóbal is quieter but steeper. Santa Ana is usually cheaper but hard going with luggage. If altitude is a concern, consider sleeping in the Sacred Valley first and returning to Cusco later.

Neighborhoods at a glance

San Blas Cusco

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m. That makes steep streets noticeably harder, which affects how each neighborhood feels.

AreaCharacterBest forWatch out for
Plaza de Armas and historic centerCentral, flat, the widest choice of restaurants, tour agencies and sightsFirst-timers, families, short staysBusier and noisier
San BlasArtisan quarter, colonial houses, boutique hotels; roughly a 10-minute walk from the plazaCouples, atmosphereSteep, narrow streets that taxis cannot always reach
San CristóbalQuieter, above the plaza, with rooftop viewsTravellers who want calmSteeper than San Blas
Santa AnaLocal feel, about a 15-minute walk from the center, generally lower pricesBudget-conscious visitorsSteep; poor with heavy luggage, children or older travellers

San Blas is known as Cusco’s artisan corner and has hotels among the best in the city, but its hills are not trivial at this altitude. Santa Ana is best avoided if you are travelling with children, older relatives or heavy luggage.

It is an all-suite hotel between the Plaza de Armas and San Blas. JW Marriott El Convento Cusco states that all its guestrooms are oxygen-enriched. It occupies a restored 16th-century convent beside the Plaza de Armas. Palacio del Inka, a Luxury Collection hotel, sits opposite Qorikancha.
  • Boutique in San Blas. Antigua Casona San Blas is a restored colonial house about 100 m from San Blas Square.
  • Sacred Valley first. Urubamba sits at about 2,870 m, well below Cusco. Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection resort, is in Urubamba.

Choosing by travel style

Couple Tourist Cusco
  • Concerned about altitude: stay in the flat center with oxygen-enriched rooms, or sleep in the Sacred Valley first. The CDC notes that travellers to Cusco can descend below the airport’s altitude to sleep for one or two nights before ascending. See our guide to altitude sickness in Cusco.
  • Couples: San Blas boutique hotels, provided you are comfortable with hills.
  • Families and multigenerational travel: the flat historic center.
  • Early departures to Machu Picchu: PeruRail trains leave from Ollantaytambo and from Poroy near Cusco. A central hotel shortens transfers. See our guide on how to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

How many nights and in what order

Sacred Valley Urubamba

A common sequence is to sleep in the Sacred Valley first, visit Machu Picchu, then finish in Cusco. This is a recommendation, not a rule. Compare it with our Sacred Valley guide and plan your sightseeing with our guide to things to do in Cusco.
